Bill Silliker Dies While Leading Photographers Group in MaineOctober 13, 2003
NANPA mourns the passing of Bill Silliker, "The Mooseman," who died suddenly while on the Roaring Brook Trail at Baxter State Park, Maine. We have lost a great friend and the world has lost a premier photographer whose spirit and vision will continue to touch and inspire us all. It is sadly appropriate that Bill passed away while working at Baxter State Park. His photos of the moose in the area composed the Maine Moose Watcher calendars from 1997 through 2004. His photographs were also featured at the visitors' center for this park that served as an important canvas for his photography. His dedication to capturing the wildlife of northern forests garnered him international praise and publishing credits in myriad publications, including Audubon, Discovery, National Geographic, National Wildlife, Outdoor Life, and Outdoor Photographer, to name just a few. He was the author and photographer of many books, such as Uses for Mooses (2000), Moose Watchers Handbook (2001), and Saving Maine (2002). He was also the official photographer for L.L. Bean. Silliker was one of the NANPA pioneers, becoming a charter member in August 1994, the year the association was founded. He served on the Board of Directors from 1999-2002, where his contributions helped to shape our organization into what it is today. He also co-chaired the Ethics Committee from 1994-97 and served on the Resource Relations Committee from 1997-99. We will miss him terribly.
