Richard Halperin -

Rich Halperin, NANPA President
Six-hundred-and-thirty-five people attended the 2008 Summit in Destin, Florida, and it was one of the most successful ever. Congratulations to the committee members and staff who planned it and carried it out.

What I like most about Summits is the opportunity they provide to see old friends and make new ones. I especially enjoy talking to our committee chairs because they are in the trenches, making things happen.

Something I learned in Destin is that some of our committees are looking for a few good volunteers to either become committee members or help with specific projects. Would you like to become more involved in NANPA's mission and activities? Read on . . .

The Resource Relations Committee engages with public resource managers and other governmental agencies with the goal of maintaining or improving access of public lands by photographers. These managers and agencies may operate at local, state, provincial or federal levels and may include nature resource areas, refuges and parks. NANPA receives numerous referrals of access issues from NANPA members and others. These issues often involve rules that might restrict photographers' access. Each issue must first be analyzed by the Resource Relations Committee and, if warranted, the committee then makes a recommendation to NANPA's Board as to action to be taken with respect to the issue. Terra Lightsmith, the committee chair, would like to have a group of individuals who she can call upon to help in analyzing the issues and formulating an appropriate and effective response. Nature photographers who also have experience in law or in government at the administrative or legislative levels would be of particular help to Terra. Access to public lands in North America and around the world is of vital interest to the entire nature photography community in general and to NANPA members in particular. If you are interested, please send an email to Terra at denaliphotos@lycos.com.

The Membership Committee has recently been involved in establishing relationships with local organizations that will be of benefit to both NANPA and the local organizations. These symbiotic relationships might involve mutual membership arrangements or arrangements for participation in Summits, NANPA Road Shows or Regional Events. Because these arrangements are made locally, Clarence Carvell, chair of the Membership Committee, needs to have a network of people willing to work with their local nature photography organizations and camera clubs to try to establish relationships and arrangements. If you can help, please email Clarence at CCarvell@aol.com.

The Development and Marketing Committee is engaged in an ambitious effort to spread the word about NANPA and thereby increase participation in NANPA by sponsors, exhibitors, advertisers, corporate members, portfolio reviewers and others. Stephen Spill, the chair, is looking for people who have relationships with potential sponsors and others or people who have ideas about how to develop such relationships. If you can help, please email Steve at steves@essandess.com.

The History Committee has a remarkable tape archive of interviews with some of the giants of nature photography. Sadly, some of those interviewed have since died. The committee has been charged with transcribing the interviews so that they will be available to scholars and NANPA members alike. If you are a skilled and accurate transcriber and would like to work with these historic tapes, please email History Committee chair Shirley Nuhn at s_nuhn@msn.com.

The Refuge Blinds Committee has worked with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to contribute financing for the placement of photo blinds in national wildlife refuges. The committee works directly with the refuge managers to determine appropriate placement of the blinds. The Board has concluded that the committee should try to work with local friends-of-the-refuge organizations to ensure that blinds are optimally located for photography and properly maintained and identified as NANPAsponsored blinds. The Refuge Blinds Committee was chaired by Jane Kinne, and since Jane's death, we have been looking for a new committee chair. If you would like to serve as chair of the Refuge Blinds Committee, please email me at rhalperin@mclaughlinstern.com or Sharon Cohen-Powers, president-elect and chair of the Committee on Structure, at sharon@loupemedia.com.

In general, helping with one of these committees does not necessarily require joining the committee and becoming involved in all of the committee's activities. In many cases, volunteers can help with specific projects and thereby limit their commitment.

NANPA could not function without volunteers. Although we have a talented and dedicated staff, most of what NANPA does is conceived and brought about by our committees. If you can participate, please volunteer.
