Arctic Opera

polar bear; Ursus maritimus
Barter Island, Alaska, USA
Single exposure, not baited

I had the previlage of watching an young polar bear mother serving as surrogate mother for two year old cubs from another mother with injured hind leg. Surrogate mother was training the cubs by sparring with them and kept close association with injured mother. After each sparring session, cubs will return to their mother and she gently sparred with them. It was quite amazing to see this bonding process.
