Conservation Photography Stream
Sep 30 – Oct 6, 2005 (Anchorage, Alaska)
- The WWC convenes every three to four years around the world, and is always focused on wilderness and people. From business to politics, and science to culture, WWCs are actually a consortium of concerned citizens and senior-level representation from governments, the private sector, native peoples, non-profit organizations, and academia, and are carefully designed to bring together the full spectrum of wilderness-related views. This broad participation, combined with open and balanced debate, generates practical conservation outcomes, enhances public understanding, and honors the spirit of wild nature.
-
- For the first time in history, the Eighth WWC will include a significant emphasis on conservation photography, marking the first time that this important conservation tool is given a central, working role in a major conservation forum. Committee Overview
This is one of the youngest committees established. It was born out of a need to provide more means of participation of international members and to offer NANPA the potential to reach out to foreign photographers and organizations.
Some of the issues we are working on deal with the creation of a protocol for the inclusion of foreign students in the Students Program, the ability to communicate with foreign photography organizations (the equivalents of NANPA in other countries), both to inform them of our activities and to learn from theirs, and the opportunity to invite foreign keynote speakers to enrich NANPA's summit.
Some of the goals we are hoping to accomplish include:
a) Broaden NANPA's membership outside North America
b) Foster exchanges between North American members and overseas members through:
a. Exhibitions (see above)
b. Exchange of ideas
c. Publications
d. Providing guidance to foreign students
c) Broaden our artistic perspective by having a chance to look at the work being done by photographers in other parts of the planet
d) Development of potential sponsors overseas
e) Make our North American membership aware of:
a. Contests carried out overseas (see above)
b. Publication opportunities
c. International agencies looking for new photographers
Our activities
At the latest Committee meeting we agreed on an action plan for the first six months of 2004. We charged ourselves with the following activities:
- Development of an online discussion area for members of this committee to further the items in this agenda
- Development of a short list of possible international keynote speakers to be submitted to the board
- Request more flexibility in the application process for foreign students
- Compile a full list of current foreign members of NANPA
- Development of a list of suggested topics with international subjects for future NANPA break out sessions
- Suggest a lower membership fee for international members to foster participation despite expensive traveling cost
- Develop a photography travel program pre/post NANPA for members visiting us from overseas.
- Have the NANPA website advertise international events, such as contests, exhibitions and photography meetings.
- Development of a full list of photography clubs, independent photographers and agencies in other countries
- Have our activities published in the NANPA website
At the end of those six months we plan to report to NANPA's board and engage them in a conversation about the appropriate channels to begin interacting with some of those foreign institutions.
