Candidate Questionnaire
Give us a brief overview of your job, photographic, educational, volunteer, organizational board/committee skills.
I am the Director of Digital Photography at The New Mexico Photography Field School where for the last three years I have been teaching Photoshop and leading various digital photography workshops and tours. I sell fine art prints and note cards and recently had an exhibit at the Randal Davies Audubon Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Photography has been a part of my life since junior high and I have been pursuing it professionally since 1999. Prior to that, I was a Applications Systems Analyst for over 30 years. I have a BS in Computer Science and was employed as the Systems Development Manager for the Longhorn Division of Morton-Thiokol Corporation with a staff of nine professionals.
How long have you been an active member of NANPA?
I am a Charter Member of NANPA.
What Summits/Forums have you attended?
I have attended all Summits except Ft. Myers and Denver.
Have you served as a NANPA volunteer or served on any NANPA committees?
I have volunteered on the Communications Committee and currently help John Lock monitor the user forums on the NANPA web site. Back in the very beginning, I coordinated the NANPA forum on CompuServe until the demise of CompuServe.
What particular expertise and/or qualities would you bring to the NANPA Board?
I have managed my own consulting company as well as a department within a large corporation. I lead photographic workshops with a wide mix of participant backgrounds and interests. The experience gained in these positions gives me the ability to relate to and understand the needs of the wide-ranging NANPA membership - both amateur and professional. Having volunteered on various community committees and boards, including chairing some, I can work well with a wide variety of people who have differing ideas and backgrounds.
How would you use your abilities to further the NANPA mission?
I want to work with the program to find internship positions for the college scholarship students. Also, NANPA should further recognize and help those who market their work as Fine Art Prints. I want NANPA's web page to become the focus of information in the interim between summits. I would work with the Communications Committee to help achieve this.
How do you envision NANPA's role in the future of nature photography? How would you further that role?
NANPA should provide information to members on business matters and evolving technology. We must also lobby Congress on issues involving copyright laws and access to National Parks and other public lands, hopefully in concert with other photography associations. The dual nature of NANPA membership with professionals and amateurs makes it challenging to adequately address both groups and this must be a board priority.
Why do you want to serve on the NANPA Board of Directors? If elected, what would you personally like to accomplish during your term on the NANPA Board?
I would continue the vigilance that has put NANPA on a firm financial footing and bring a pragmatism to the decision making process. At the end of my term, I want to look back and know that members felt that the board was working hard in all their interests.
