Candidate Questionnaire
Give us a brief overview of your job, photographic, educational, volunteer, organizational board/committee skills.
I'm a Professional Wetland Scientist, Wildlife Biologist, and President of Titlow Ecological Services, LLC (TES) in North Carolina. I began my career in 1973, working with the federal government as an Environmental Scientist and Regulatory Compliance Specialist on National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) issues. In 1986, after eight years with the National Park Service in Denver, Colorado, I moved to New England and began a second career working as a Professional Wetland Scientist and Wildlife Biologist for private environmental consulting firms. During the past 21 years, I've worked for private firms in North Carolina and Massachusetts, supervising staffs of environmental scientists, varying in size from five to 40 people.
For the past 30 years, I have maintained an avocation as a freelance writer and photographer. As director of Budd Titlow's NATUREGRAPHS, I coordinated four-day photography workshops on Monhegan Island, Maine (Maine Island Workshops, 1995-96), in Sugar Hill, New Hampshire (Selective Focus Workshops, 1998), and at The Ford Plantation (Artist-in-Residence, 2003-04) in Savannah, Georgia. I've also served as Co-Founder and Program Chairman for the Sudbury (MA) Valley Nature Photographers (1995-2002), Sudbury Valley Trustees (Stewardship Committee, 1994-2003), Southborough (MA) Open Lands Foundation (Board of Directors, 1997-2001), Denver Audubon Society (Newsletter Editor, 1978-1983), and the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences (Board of Directors, Current).
How long have you been an active member of NANPA?
I'm a Charter Member of NANPA.
What Summits/Forums have you attended?
Ft. Myers, Florida (1995); Austin, Texas (2000); Portland, Oregon (2004); and Charlotte, North Carolina (2005)
Have you served as a NANPA volunteer or served on any NANPA committees?
Environmental Committee (2004-2005) and Keynote Committee (2006-Present)
What particular expertise and/or qualities would you bring to the NANPA Board?
- Freelance Writer
- Professional Wetland Scientist (Society of Wetland Scientists #754)
- Professional Wildlife Biologist (Master of Science, Virginia Tech, 1973)
- Specialist in natural resource baseline data collection, impact assessment, environmental regulatory policy/compliance, and permitting
How would you use your abilities to further the NANPA mission?
NANPA is comprised of people from all walks of life, who share one common bond - a love for the natural beauty of our earth. This is my greatest joy in being a member of NANPA. Throughout my career, I've taken every opportunity to "give back" to conservation and the natural environment. I've done this by working with local/regional land trusts, starting regional photography groups, and teaching photography workshops for conservation organizations. My greatest satisfaction is the number of people who have told me that I inspired them to take up nature photography. I will bring these same skills and dedication to make a difference to my duties as a NANPA Board Member. I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that the continuing success of NANPA and protecting the world from Global Warming are linked by the same objective - spreading the word about the beauty and value of our natural resources. Every person that we reach with this message will become both more cognizant of the crisis we are now facing and - hopefully - a new member of NANPA.
How do you envision NANPA's role in the future of nature photography? How would you further that role?
As a Board Member, I would emphasize the land conservation efforts of NANPA. I see NANPA's conservation role as being "champions" of the places on earth that are most deserving of preservation. NANPA photographers should document the natural beauty and resource qualities of jeopardized properties and then let the conservation organizations take over to establish the necessary safeguards. I will use my experience and expertise in land planning and resource management to help expand this initiative.
Why do you want to serve on the NANPA Board of Directors? If elected, what would you personally like to accomplish during your term on the NANPA Board?
In giving a collective "voice" to nature photographers worldwide, NANPA is a landmark organization. NANPA also epitomizes the things that - aside from my family - I value most in life: natural resources, open spaces, artistic beauty, individual creativity, outdoor activities, and the ability to roam freely across pristine landscapes.
For my personal goals as a Board Member, I believe education is NANPA's most important initiative. I can't imagine a better resource than NANPA for educating - through visualization - people everywhere about the incredible beauty and - as necessary - the unfortunate misuse of our natural resources. In summary, I would explore the potential for increased educational activities and associated worldwide land conservation initiatives.
