- Trip 1: Martin Refuge Photo Blinds - Refuge Photo Blinds – John and Audrey Martin will open their photo blinds to participants on these trips. The area around the blinds has food and water so animals and birds are common. This is a great opportunity to photograph green jay, greater kiskadee, chachalaca, and javelina. Full day outing. Fee covers: transportation. All meals are the responsibility of the attendee.
- Trip 2: Laguna Atascosa & Sabal Palms – Two of the best locations in the Rio Grande Valley to photograph. Laguna Atascosa is our destination in the morning, for some time in the photo blind and butterfly garden. Sabal Palms is the afternoon destination, for a chance to photograph in the last remaining palm forest in the area and in the fabulous butterfly gardens. Full day outing. Fee covers: transportation. All meals are the responsibility of the attendee.
- Trip 3: Butterfly Photo Experience Every October the butterfly population in the Rio Grande Valley explodes. The tropical air could be thick with lime-green Lyside butterflies or Burnt-orange Snouts. Lavender Mistflower bushes might host queens, soldiers, Painted Lady and American Lady. Tropical butterflies like Peacock, Malachite, Blue Metalmark, Mexican Bluewing and Pixie are possibilities. Each trip will be geared to photograph the maximum number of butterfly species in the best flower gardens in the Rio Grande Valley. Full day outing. Fee covers: transportation. All meals are the responsibility of the attendee.
- Trip 4: Rancho Los Ebanos is a working ranch on Mexico's Gulf Coast. Space is limited on this trip because the shooting is specialized. Targets will be birds, but mammals, like Coati and Ocelot, are possible. Accommodations are rustic, dormitory style. Trip leaves McAllen on Oct 25th and returns late on the 29th. Fee covers: accommodations, meals while at the ranch and transportation. Meals on the way to the ranch (lunch) and returning from the ranch (lunch and dinner) are the responsibility of the attendee.
- Trip 5: Rancho Del Cielo Research Station - continuing education opportunity with the University of Texas Southmost College, a chance to stay in UT's Mexico research station in the northernmost tropical cloud forest in the Western Hemisphere. This preserve is protected and access is limited. Across the Tropic of Cancer, there will be tropical birds, bromeliads, waterfalls, and exotic butterflies. Experienced naturalists on site. Accommodations in Mexico are rustic and travel is rough (eight-hour van ride to the station). Meals are provided by the staff at the station. Trip leaves McAllen on October 25th and returns late on the 28th. Fee covers: accommodations, meals (at the station) and transportation. All other meals are the responsibility of the attendee.
- Trip 6: Chipinque & Monterrey - Journey to the mountains around Mexico's second largest city. Chipinque, a stunning park on a forested mountain overlooking Monterrey, is Friday's destination. Butterflies such as Julia, Zebra and Mexican Silver-Spot are abundant. Saturday is a chance to see Horsetail Falls and rural Mexico. Sunday morning will be spent in La Estanzuela, a fifty-year-old city park with gorgeous gardens that are a magnet for tropical butterflies. This is a good chance to experience Mexico with an upscale flare. Trip leaves McAllen on Oct 25th and returns on the 27th. Fee covers: accommodations, breakfast at the hotel and transportation. All other meals are the responsibility of the attendee.
- Trip 7: Guerro Viejo was once a thriving town on the Mexican side of the border. It was flooded by a major reservoir project but recently uncovered by drought. The cathedral and plaza offer wonderful subjects for creative photography. A half-day visit to this site offers a small taste of travel into Mexico. Full day outing. Fee covers: transportation. All meals are the responsibility of the attendee.
