(Open to the public. Separate registration required.) This workshop will pertain to the use of technology in enhancing traditional imaging. Lepp will discuss the process from basic computer information and terminology, the means of importing images into the computer, enhancing images while they are in the computer, and the methods and advancements in printing and exporting images.

Never intended for publication, this very personal adventure has become his most visible project to date with all 90 photographs published in National Geo../graphic and a best selling book.     The Process from Conception to Publication
    Natalie Fobes
    Discussion of the organization, funding and presentation of personal projects. Fobes will also introduce Blue Earth Alliance, a non-profit foundation she co-founded that is dedicated to helping photographers shooting documentary projects.
  • B. Business:
    Book Publishing via Conservation Partnerships
    Thomas Blagden
    Blagden specializes in photo book projects produced through conservation partnerships. He is well recognized for the quality of his books and their influence as catalysts for land protection and environmental causes. Blagden's seminar will share his personal approach to photography and publishing by profiling his experiences and images with four or more of his books. He will describe the specifics of book development and partnerships consisting of a conservation organization, sponsor, and major publisher (vs. self-publishing), thus allowing the production of high-end books on limited geo../graphic areas of conservation importance.

    Working in Frigid Conditions
    Linda DeLay-Joesph
    Working in frigid conditions creates challenges the average photographer doesn't endure. You and your equipment are potentially at risk. Whether it's an ice cave or -52 F degrees temperature, you'll learn expert tips on pure, frigid conditions. Learn what to expect from film, camera, equipment, body and mind and understand your limits! DeLay-Joseph will explore ethical methods of winter wildlife photography, camouflage, blinds and more.
  • D. Marketing:
    What Are Photo Editors Looking For?
    Connie Gelb(Nature Conservancy), Bonnie Stutski(Smithsonian), Hisako Tanaka(Sinra), Moderator - John Nuhn(NationalWildlife, International Wildlife)
    Learn how to sell your work and help protect the environment at the same time. Examples of successful photo shoots will be presented and explanations given of the differences between a good assignment photographer and a great one. Also covered is what promotional materials stand out and why; why shooting the assignment is only half the battle; how the Internet has changed the nature of photo assignments; the importance of knowing your market. Join panelists and photo editors Connie Gelb, Bonnie Stutski and Hisako Tanaka who will explain what they look for in photographs for publication, how photographers can improve their submissions, and the necessity of thinking like an editor.

Jim will share with us the importance in conveying, through our photographs and personal essays, a sense of place for lesser-known but special regions of our country. With our images and words, we can create awareness, foster understanding, and generate support for these hidden "jewels" of our natural heritage.

    An Exploration of the Unusual Photo../graphic Opportunities Above and Below Water

    The session will highlight techniques, favorite areas, and the equipment necessary to best capture images ranging from breaching marine mammals, schools of brilliant fish, to tiny colorful underwater macro subjects.

    Working Together as a Team

    The best relationship between a photographer and an agent is the one which brings maximum mutual benefits. But what is that relationship? And what are the benefits? What can you do to ensure mutual goals? Intended primarily for pros, aspiring pros and agents, this panel will explore those questions and others regarding income, photographer promotion, image saleability, changing market demands and exclusivity. The panel will consist of nature photography agents Gerry Ellis and Larry Minden and two of their photographers.
  • G. Business:
    Estate Planning
    Darlene M. Cobian, LLB
    This presentation will address many of the concerns common to all of us. It includes the transfer of assets during our lifetimes and at death, reduction or avoidance of estate taxes, and management of assets for our children. Cobian also focuses on concerns specific to pro and aspiring pro photographers, including valuation of collections and handling of agency agreements at death.
  • H. How to:
    Enhancing your Photos with Digital Imaging
    Chase Swift
    Discussion of what can be done with digital images using Adobe Photoshop (version 3.0 and 4.0); techniques such as how to repair, enhance, restore, and composite images. Recommended computer system handouts will be available. Discussion will be limited to Photoshop techniques, not computer hardware. This seminar will be geared to the novice who wants to know the basics.

Chris Newbert
Creative underwater photographer Chris Newbert will present marine life images made by himself and his wife, Brigitte Wilms, from Papua New Guinea, the Galapagos, the Red Sea, the Solomon Islands and more. Subjects will range from 45-foot-long humpback whales to abstracts of tiny, rarely seen undersea creatures.

    Maligned as a difficult and disappointing tool to use, flash can make the difference between making no shot at all and capturing a masterpiece. This program delves into the mysteries of flash, using motivational examples and concrete how-to facts.
  • K. How to: Simple Slide Presentations with a Message
    Kevin Fitz Patrick
    The session will cover Multi-Image theory including how to shoot for Multi-Image, as well as the planning and production processes involved in creating complete shows with narration and music. Examples of programs produced for environmental groups in the Southern Appalachian region will be presented and discussed.

    Come and listen to some working photography couples describe the highs and lows involved in doing business together. Starting at sunrise, 44 participants can join professionals Darrell Gulin, Arthur Morris, Bob Rozinski and Wendy Shattil for hands-on instruction at the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge. It is a short bus ride to and from the refuge, just north of the Mexican border. The photographers will be split into four groups of eleven and will take advantage of the migratory birds as well as the small mammals that inhabit the refuge boundaries.

Here is the blueprint that covers the entire plan from the moment that the processed film comes back until you bank the returns from reproduction fees, print sales, or assignments. We cover every aspect: editing, filing, researching, copyrighting, mailing lists, promotion, delivery, tracking outstanding images, negotiating fees, invoicing, collections and conflict resolution. This will be an intense, information packed session with 30 minutes for your specific questions.
