NANPA's Seventh Annual Summit
Odyssey 2001

Las Vegas, Nevada

Pre-Summit Field Trip

Hoover Dam / Lake Mead

Wednesday January 17, 2001, 8:00am - 3:00pm

Description:
Alison Jones and Russ Kinne will lead the group on a photography excursion around the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead area. The Hoover Dam is an awesome structure, and one of the tallest dams in the world at 760 feet. Photographically, the dam offers several options for good composition, with arcs, parabolas, polygons, parallel figures, almost any kind of geometric shape you can imagine. Black-and-white photography is eminently well suited here. The guided tour down into the dam's innards is well worth taking, and the huge turbines make great photographic subjects. Since Black Canyon, below the dam, is one of the hottest places in Nevada, there's a good chance of seeing soaring birds riding the thermals. Lake Mead has 500 miles of shoreline. Geologically, of course, this area is very rich. And since it's a huge body of water in a waterless desert, wildlife - including bighorn sheep - tends to congregate here.

The field trip will enable photographers to:

  • Explore and photograph in a location that exemplifies the wonder of man's accomplishment and the beauty of the nature that surrounds it
  • Learn tips and techniques on how to compose images in both color and black-and-white photography
  • Network, have fun, and enjoy the Great Outdoors

Equipment:
Participants should come equipped with a sturdy tripod; a camera with fixed focal length or zoom wide-angle and mid-range telephoto lenses; and other accessories such as filters, lens hoods, etc. Don't forget plenty of film! Note: Participants should wear clothing conducive to photographing in a desert environment during the winter season. Participants should also be familiar with the operation of their cameras.

Who should attend:
This field trip will appeal to all levels of
photography expertise. The photo leaders will concentrate on the technical and compositional skills you need to capture great images using
the equipment you currently own.

Fee: $85 member, $115 non-member (includes: breakfast, lunch, beverages, tour fees, park fees and transportation)

Leaders and Host:

Alison M. Jones has been photographing travel, architecture, people and natural history for more than 10 years. She specializes in documenting third-world cultures, especially community life in rural areas, non-governmental development projects, African wildlife, and culturally distinctive regions of Europe and the U.S. A frequent photo lecturer, she uses her library of over 25,000 images to supply the advertising, editorial, educational and fine art photo markets.

Russ Kinne has been taking pictures all his adult life. Photo assignments have taken him to 60 countries and Antarctica. He has photographed in medical operating rooms and produces forensic photographs for several police forces. A former editor at Popular Photography, he has written two books and has others currently in progress.

Sheree L. Norman is very familiar with the area and serves as our host. She is a member of the Nevada Camera Club and has 15 years of
photography experience. She uses her photo skills as a Crime Scene Analyst for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, and also
teaches Forensic Photography at the Community College of Southern Nevada.
