NANPA's Seventh Annual Summit
Odyssey 2001

Post-Summit Field Trip

Valley of Fire State Park / Lake Mead

Sunday, January 21, 2001, 6:00am - 6:00pm

Description:
Jim Clark, Steve Gilroy and Ruth Hoyt will be your professional photography field guides during this day of photographing beautiful desert landscapes. This field trip will provide participants an opportunity to learn more about the basics of landscape photography, including use of hyperfocal and other depth of field techniques, subject placement, effective metering techniques and integrating compositional guidelines. Throughout the day, field trip leaders will assist participants in seeking out the essential elements for composing powerful landscape images. Special Note: During the NANPA summit, workshop leaders Jim Clark and Steve Gilroy will be presenting relevant breakout sessions.

This field trip will enable photographers to:

  • Explore and photograph in a location that exemplifies the beauty, wonder and mystery of a desert ecosystem
  • Learn tips and techniques on how to compose landscape images that effectively portray a sense of place
  • Discuss and practice different techniques for determining proper exposure, hyperfocal distance and subject placement in landscape photography
  • Network, have fun and enjoy the Great Outdoors

Equipment:
Participants should come equipped with a sturdy tripod, preferably one that can spread low to the ground; one or two camera bodies; fixed focal length or zoom wide-angle and mid-range telephoto lenses; macro lenses or extension tubes; and other accessories such as filters, lens hoods, etc. Don't forget plenty of film! Note: Participants should wear clothing conducive to photographing in a desert environment during the winter season. Participants should also be familiar with the operation of their equipment.

Who should attend:
All levels of photography expertise are welcomed. The instructional portion of the workshop will focus primarily on practical applications and techniques that beginning and intermediate skilled photographers will find most useful.

Fee: $125 member, $175 non-member (includes: breakfast, lunch, snack, beverages, park fees and transportation)

Leaders and Host:

Anne Carter is very familiar with the area and serves as our host.
She is a member of the Nevada Camera Club. She has 20 years of
photography experience and her work has been featured in Photographer's Forum.

Jim Clark is a nature photographer, writer, wildlife biologist, and
workshop instructor. He is the author and photographer of West Virginia: The Allegheny Highlands. His articles and photographs have appeared in magazines such as Outdoor Photographer, Nature's Best Photography, Birder's World, and Wonderful West Virginia.

Steve Gilroy is director of Alaska Photo Tours. He specializes in
organizing successful photographic expeditions throughout Alaska, Patagonia, and other parts of the world. He is a knowledgeable
speaker with numerous commercial and editorial credits.

Ruth Hoyt teaches nature photography in national parks, the Missouri Botanical Garden, and for the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. Her photos have appeared in National Geographic, AAA, Nature Conservancy, Missouri Wildlife and Missouri magazine.
