NANPA's Seventh Annual Summit
Odyssey 2001
Las Vegas, Nevada
Post-Summit
Field Trip
Death Valley
Sunday, January 21, 8:00am
through Monday, January 22, 6:00pm
Description:
Join photo leaders Joe and Mary Ann McDonald, Bob Rozinski and Wendy
Shattil in exploring the stunning desert scenery and complex geology of
Death Valley National Park. The overnight trek begins with a two-hour
bus ride west of Las Vegas, taking us to the heart of this largest national
park in the lower 48 states. Ubehebe Crater, Zabriskie Point, Artist's
Palette, Badwater, and Scotty's Castle are some of the locations we'll
photograph. The sunset shoot will be at the most photographed sand dunes
in the world. A special evening program will follow with a park ranger
and a complimentary slide show by the Nevada Camera Club, presented by
its president, professional photographer Jerome Hamilton. We will overnight
at Furnace Creek Ranch and take advantage of unique photo opportunities
the following day before returning to Las Vegas. Our photo leaders will
be available for guidance throughout the two days as you look for your
own interpretations of this classic location.
This field trip will enable photographers to:
- Explore and photograph in a location that exemplifies
the beauty, wonder and mystery of a desert ecosystem
- Learn tips and techniques on how to choose just the right spot and
compose a strong image
- See how varying qualities of light influence a photo
- Network, have fun and enjoy the Great Outdoors
Equipment:
A tripod is necessary for the best results when photographing landscapes,
preferably one that can spread low to the ground; a camera with lenses
from wide angle to telephoto; and other accessories such as filters, lens
hoods, etc. may be useful. Gear should be no more than you can comfortably
carry over uneven terrain. Don't forget plenty of film! Note: Participants
should wear clothing conducive to photographing in a desert environment
during the winter season. Participants should be familiar with the operation
of their cameras.
Who should attend:
All levels of photographic expertise are invited to participate. The trip
will emphasize the technical skills you need to capture great images using
the equipment you currently own.
Fee: $250 for a single room or $200 for shared room (includes:
meals, beverages, hotel lodging Sunday evening at the Furnace Creek Ranch,
park fees and transportation)
Leaders and Host:
Joe and Mary Ann McDonald spend more than seven months a year
leading photo tours and safaris, and teaching workshops. Joe has been
photographing wildlife for almost 30 years and is the author of six books.
One of Joe's images was selected by the U.S. Postal Service in 1999 as
a stamp in the "Arctic Animals" series. Mary Ann is the author of 29 children's
books. She was a dual winner in the 1994 BBC Wildlife Photographer of
the Year competition and received honorable mention status in the 1998
competition.
Dr. Richard Perkins, chair of this year's Summit, spent many years
in the Southwest and is very familiar with Death Valley and serves as
our host. He has been an avid nature photographer for more than 20 years,
pursuing the craft during his non-medical hours. He has supplied images
to Okapia and GeoIMAGERY, and markets on his own as well from his new
home in South Florida. He was chosen amateur Photographer of the Year
in Nevada in 1997.
Bob Rozinski and Wendy Shattil are well known for their team approach
to capturing the private moments of wildlife on film. Wendy was the first
woman awarded Grand Prize in the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year
competition. She and Bob, whose images have appeared in hundreds of publications
worldwide, also have ten books to their credit.
