IN THIS ISSUE:
 PRE- AND POST-SUMMIT
EVENTS
Dawn at Bosque. As the night fades, the snow geese stir. Then, with little warning, hundreds take flight in
the warming light. A perfect photo opportunity? You bet, and you can be there with professionals to show you how to
get the best, most creative shots. This year NANPA is offering two overnight field trips to Bosque, one before
(February 17-18) and one after (February 23-24) the Annual Summit in Albuquerque. Be on location for evening and
morning shoots with seasoned instructors Darrell Gulin, Connie Toops, Tom Vezo and Lynda Richardson for the
pre-Summit Field Trip, and Arthur Morris, Lonnie Brock, Karen Hollingsworth and Rogert Devore for the post-Summit
Field Trip. Overnight accommodations, transportation to and from the refuge (from the Hyatt Hotel, Albuquerque),
breakfast, lunch and refreshments are all included. See your Summit brochure or click here for details and join in!
Don't have the time to do an overnighter? NANPA also offers a half-day field trip on Wednesday, February
19, to Petroglyph National Monument, only a few miles from the Hyatt Hotel. This field trip emphasizes landscape
photography and is led by renowned photographers David Muench and Tom Till. Transportation, park fees, breakfast
and refreshments are included.
There is a limited capacity for the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge field trip and the Petroglyph
National Monument field trip. Make sure to register soon as they are filling up quickly!
Interested in increasing your knowledge of digital photography? George Lepp will be conducting an all-day
workshop on Wednesday, February 19, on Tips and Techniques to Optimize Your Digital Photography. Here is
your chance to learn from a master! George will be showing how to get the most from capturing and outputting
digital images, including scanning techniques and the best and latest cameras, scanners and printers.
Prefer to improve your writing instead? Let's face it: Most photographers are better photographers than
writers. But a photographer who is a good and careful writer will get more assignments, will see more story ideas
accepted, and will find it easier to communicate with editors. For the first time, NANPA is offering an all-day
Writers Workshop on Wednesday, February 19. The workshop is divided into morning and afternoon sessions and are
intended to work together, but you can also attend only one session and still learn much. The morning session,
Writing About Nature, is instructed by John Murray, author or editor of more than 40 nature books including
his classic nature-writing textbook and the annual Americans' Nature Writing series. The afternoon session,
Fine-Tuning the Words, is led by Shirley Nuhn, a freelance writer/editor and instructor of college-level
English who has given many workshops in writing and editing and has tutored business professionals.
And what about after the Summit? NANPA offers two more detailed workshops to improve your photography
business. On Sunday morning, February 23, Michal Heron will conduct Negotiating and Pricing Strategies.
Michal is a photographer actively involved in stock photography and the author of several books on shooting stock
and pricing photography. This workshop is designed for working photographers who have been actively earning a
living in nature photography, as well as for entry-level photographers who want a better understanding of where to
begin with pricing and negotiating.
On Sunday afternoon, Ray Pfortner presents Creating (and Selling) a Book of Your Own. Ray is a consultant
on book publishing, marketing to magazines, and business practices. He has worked closely with Art Wolfe, Kennan
Ward, Minden Pictures and Peter Arnold, Inc. This workshop is for anyone who wants to produce a photo book. Ray
will cover practical information on assembling book proposals, finding a publisher, negotiating contracts,
distribution and marketing, steps toward making your own book a reality.
For further information on all these field trips and workshops, see your Summit brochure or click here.

MEET KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Joel Sartore
With all these terrific pre- and post-Summit events, don't forget the Summit itself! Here is an in-depth
look at Joel Sartore, one of the keynote speakers:
A former newspaper photographer for the Wichita Eagle, Joel Sartore has spent more than 10 years on
assignment for National Geographic covering endangered species and land use issues extensively. His
articles have covered grizzlies, wolves and Madidi National Park, among others. You've seen his work in
National Geographic, now go behind the scenes with Joel Sartore as he takes you on assignment for one
of the world's greatest magazine. Learn about endangered species and habitats, and what you can do to help.
Visit his website www.joelsartore.com for more information. You'll find the highlights of ten years' worth of
work covering endangered species and land use issues for National Geographic Magazine, as well as
information about wildlife and news about selected current environmental topics. Besides being a contract
photographer for National Geographic, Joel's work has appeared in Audubon, Life,
Newsweek, Sports Illustrated, Time and numerous book projects including the "Day in the
Life" series. Joel and his work have also been the subject of several national television shows, including
National Geographic's Explorer and CBS This Morning.
Keynote Address: Inside the World of National Geographic Wildlife
Photography--Triumphs, failures, embarrassments
Joel Sartore relates the pressure of bringing back unique images for National Geographic while
staying relatively sane on assignment and dealing with flesh eating parasites. He will share vivid details of
his experiences and show how to make the best of the worst situations, from being skunked by subjects to
being stung by them. Learn why you shouldn't tell your spouse which animal charged you. But his bottom line
is that pictures can make a difference in saving the Earth. In the long run, that's what it's all about.
