IN THIS ISSUE:

Re-view \ri-'vyü\ n (Fr. revoir, to look over): a critical evaluation (as of a book, play or other creative work)

Or photography. Among the most popular events at NANPA's Summits are the Portfolio Reviews, and this year the event has been expanded to include Editorial Reviews. When this event began at the 1996 Summit, it was limited to only a few hours with a few professionals as reviewers. Now reviews are taking place every day of the Summit, and this year there are 28 editors, agents and pro photographers who have volunteered to review your work and offer advice.

Portfolio Reviews are for all levels of photographers. For pro photographers, they are an opportunity to have their best work seen by potential clients and expand their client lists and their sales. For the aspiring pro, they are a chance to show their work and pick up tips on improving their photography and shooting what the buyers want. For those photographers just starting out, they are an occasion to find out just how good their photos really are and what markets to aim for.

New this year, Editorial Reviews provide a forum for photographers to talk one-on-one with editors at length about specific story or book proposals and accompanying images. Immediate feedback can be extremely helpful in determining whether to pursue an idea, how to present it better, or give it another angle so it would be more appealing to publishers and editors. Your proposal may even grab an editor's attention right away!

Nine reviewers have already filled their time slots (see below), but there are still some choice slots left with top reviewers if you register now! Select your preferred Portfolio or Editorial choices on the Review Registration Form included in your Summit brochure or available on NANPA's Website and send it in via on-line, mail or fax. You can sign up for as many reviews as you wish, but don't delay -- these reviews do sell out every year! Requests will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis according to your priority of request, reviewer availability and receipt of payment.

What to bring to a review? See suggestions on page 15 of the Summit brochure you were sent by mail, or click here to download it (PDF).

Meet Keynote Speaker and recipient of the NANPA Outstanding Nature Photographer of the Year Award: Gary Braasch

Gary Braasch's photography grows from a deeply felt connection with nature and an ardent conservation ethic. In the past four years alone, his articles and portfolios have appeared in Animals, Audubon, Discover, International Wildlife, Life, National Wildlife, Natural History, Outdoor Photographer, Photo District News, Scientific American, Smithsonian, Terre Sauvage, Time, and the Swiss magazine Animan. In 1999 Gary began "World View of Global Warming," a self-assigned project documenting climate change around the world. In photographic assignments he specializes in recording the essence of whole ecosystems and threats to their biodiversity, employing techniques from aerial photography to extreme close-ups and underwater shots. Gary is an active contributor to environmental efforts ranging from forest preservation in his home state of Oregon to international conservation campaigns. Projects on ancient forests of North America, Mount St. Helens volcano, a single tropical tree, an Everglades alligator hole, and a tide pool have resulted in a book and major articles in Life magazine. Gary is known for action coverage of risk-taking field science, including volcanoes, forest canopy studies, and Antarctic geologic research. Gary is also one of the most experienced editorial and documentary assignment photographers for natural history, science, and travel.

Keynote Address: Witness to a Changing Planet

Gary Braasch has devoted his career to documenting ecosystems in all their beauty and complexity. But these places - from the Arctic tundra down through the ancient forests of the Americas to Antarctica - are under siege from human use and abuse. In his presentation, Gary will review his photojournalistic coverage of these major environmental issues, and his progress in bearing witness to climate change. In his vision of the natural world, seeing the wonder as well as the plunder has been his central inspiration.
