Your "Peek" at the 2003 Summit

This is the fifth (and last) monthly issue for the NANPA 9th Annual Summit Email Newsletter (see the website for the previous issues).  This issue will highlight arrival information and details you will need on-site for the Summit in Albuquerque, New Mexico, February 19 – 23, 2003.  We have also included many links to websites that can give you even more information on certain areas.

MEET KEYNOTE SPEAKER:
Mark Moffett

Harvard-trained ecologist and award-winning photographer Dr. Mark Moffett combines high adventure with a naturalist's eye for animal stories and an environmentalist's concern. His performances dazzle audiences with brilliant insights and fascinating ideas. Moffett, a 1979 graduate of Beloit College, spends a good amount of time writing and shooting photographs of insects and small animals as he studies ecology and animal behavior.

Dr. Moffett never actually took a photography course. "....and a star was born," wrote National Geographic (Editor's Page, November 1997) of Dr. Mark W. Moffett's multifaceted career. Mark has won the top international awards in photography and journalism and a medal for writing from Harvard while maintaining his stature as a foremost expert in tropical exploration around the world.

An expert on rainforest treetops, home to most of the Earth's biodiversity, he was first to climb the world's tallest tree. He spent two years in the rain forests of Asia for his doctoral research, and has since personally explored almost all the other major tropical forests around the world, traveling long distances by boat and on foot, and climbing up ropes, towers, and ladders into the canopy.

Moffett investigates the social lives of remarkable species of ants, spiders, and frogs. He brings them to life in a photo of a perfect frog on a pristine background, telling a story in a slice of drama from the animal's life. His photos try to find the emotional element in the scene, giving it both artistic and scientific impact. The Boston Globe calls his work, "...a stunning mix of adventure, nature photography and hard scientific inquiry that ranks with the best work of Jacques Cousteau."

Turning Lowly Insects into High Drama
In a world saturated with nature pictures, it is important to get away from photographing the same subjects over and over and look for dramatic new stories. Where? One place to find them is in the high-action but little-seen world of invertebrates. Mark Moffett humorously reviews examples from around the world and discusses elements of successful photographic storytelling.

Second Petroglyph Field Trip Added:

Due to the outstanding interest Pre-Summit Petroglyph National Monument field trip has received we have worked very hard to add a second trip to accommodate all participates.  Because of a park service regulation that does not allow large groups into certain parts of the park at the same time, we have worked out a second option. The second trip will meet at 7:30 am at the Hyatt and return to the hotel by 1:30 pm on Wednesday, February 19th. (As opposed to the other scheduled trip of 5:30 am to 11:30 am.)  Both trips will be taken to the same location, just at different times and will have David Muench and Tom Till as the leaders for the full trips.  We have also added additional instructors to the field trips, Michael Francis and Bobby Harrison have been added to Group 1 and Gary Braasch and Darrell Gulin have been added to Group 2.  There are a few openings left for Group 2 that you can sign-up for on-site Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.  (Registration Hours: Tues 4-8 pm, Wed 5am-7 pm)

Final confirmation letters for Field Trips posted

The final confirmation letters for both Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge field trips and for Group 1 and 2 for the Petroglyph National Monument field trips have been posted to the NANPA web site.  You can get the information on when to meet the bus and all other details for the field trips.

SUMMIT SPOTLIGHT CORNER
information on how to get through the registration lines and extra details you may need to watch for when registering for the Summit.

To better serve you, we are reorganizing the NANPA Registration Area!

In the hopes of reducing the amount of time you stand in line waiting to pick up your on-site registration materials (or so you have something to read while waiting), we have created a new system.  You will now stop at stations to receive your registration materials.

Banquet Ticket Exchange and Ribbon Pickup Station:  If you selected to attend the banquet, you will receive a card with your badge materials.  That card will need to be exchanged for a table assignment ticket.  The instructions for this process will be passed out by NANPA volunteers as you are going through the registration line.  Along with the banquet information, there will be instructions about how to pick up your ribbons.  Each attendee will have a ribbon card enclosed with their badge materials.  If you are to receive ribbons for recognition of what you do for NANPA or other special categories (new member, etc.), you will need to exchange your card for the appropriate ribbons at the Ribbon Distribution Center.

NANPA On-Site Program and Registration Bag Pickup Station:  The on-site program, also passed out by volunteers, will list the locations and time of events. Your registration bag will include meeting materials such as, the Summit attendee’s list and exhibitor information.  Be sure to check your registration bag – you could be one of the lucky winners having it contain a special coupon for NANPA merchandise randomly distributed into the bags!

Summit Drawings Station: Back by popular demand - Attendee Appreciation and Exhibitor drawings!  Here is your opportunity to win a prize while attending the Summit.  Information about the Attendee drawing for free hotel nights and the entry card for the Exhibitor drawing are available at this station.

Registration Booths:
Pre-Registration Booth: Those attendees that registered prior to February 11th, will pick up their badge and ticket(s) here.  The ticket(s) will be behind the badge with in your badge holder.

On-Site Registration Booth: Those attendees who did not pre-register (did not receive confirmation of registration from the NANPA office) and need to register on-site, may register here.  This site also offers additional tickets sales for Pre/Post Summit events or the banquet.

Banquet Table Assignment Booth: You may exchange your banquet card for your table assignment at this site.  There will be a layout of the banquet tables displayed for you to choose your seating.  See the instructions of how to exchange your tickets and sit with your friends.

Please let us know when you pick up your ribbons.  (Note to Exhibitors: All Exhibitor ribbons are enclosed in your badge envelopes, and will be distributed at Exhibitor Registration on Wednesday, located in the Convention Center.)
