MEET Keynote Speaker
Tim Laman

Tim Laman is a field biologist and wildlife photographer with a special interest in exploring the diversity of life in the tropics.  He received his doctorate from Harvard University in 1994 for research on strangler fig trees and their associated wildlife in the rain forest canopy in Borneo.  This research gave him opportunities for climbing big trees and exploring and photographing life at the top.  Since publishing his first article about Borneo's canopy in National Geographic in 1997, Tim has become a regular contributor to the magazine.  He is also a lifelong diver who almost became a marine biologist.  Half of Tim's assignments now focus on tropical coral reefs where he finds the diversity of life equally as fascinating as the rain forest.

Canopy to Coral Reef: Exploring Tropical Diversity with a Camera
How do you tackle an assignment to photograph a place as diverse as a rain forest or coral reef?  Tim Laman will share with us some of his favorite images and stories from more than ten National Geographic assignments to tropical regions of the world.  Tim tries to match the diversity of life in the tropics with a diversity of photographic approaches.  He shoots everything from insects at three times life size to birds and primates, and he uses everything from remote cameras on game trails to blinds in the canopy.  He enjoys the challenges of near-impossible assignments such as photographing gliding animals, mostly at night.  And whether he is in the rain forest on a coral reef or in northern Japan in winter, Tim tries to push his photography beyond pure documentation into the artistic realm.  Documentation is important, especially of threatened and disappearing species, but to motivate people to care for our planet, photography has to do more than just inform.  It also must inspire, and Tim will share his thoughts on the important role of nature photography in this process.

Question:
Will audio recordings of the presentations be available for purchase?
