2007 Community Outreach Event -
PurposeThis is the second annual Community Outreach Event and fund-raiser. The net proceeds from the event will be donated to the Philip Hyde Grant fund of the NANPA Foundation. This grant is awarded annually to an individual NANPA member who is actively pursuing completion of an environmental or conservation project. Philip Hyde passed away in 2006. What better way to honor his remarkable contribution to wilderness photography than by supporting this event? We can’t all be adventuresome photographers slogging our way across unexplored lands to document biodiversity. But most of us can bring new life to our work by learning the information behind our photos, moving beyond charismatic landscapes, flora and fauna to the sometimes mundane but critical habitats and species. In other words, by telling the background stories of our photos in our presentations, articles and workshops. We hope these presentations encourage you to continue your conservation photography and to be more conservation-minded about all your nature photography. Our speakers include a serious conservation photographer and a conservation-minded landscape and travel photographer. SpeakersRen Navez
Ren Navez learned photography to capture the beauty and wonder of the environment. After living in New England and Southern California for many years, he ventured into the California desert with someone who knew it well and fell in love with it. Ren now lives in Venice, California, and frequently travels to Palm Springs and the Southern California desert. In this presentation, Ren will provide an overview of the area and look at some of the environmental impacts on this region. As the cost of living rises in the Los Angeles basin and other urban areas, people are discovering the attractions of a desert lifestyle. However, the increasing demands are creating significant stress on the fragile environment. A former film location manager and now full-time photographer, Ren’s most recent book is Palm Springs: California’s Desert Gem. Roy Toft
"The Osa Rainforest: Mecca of Biodiversity" A nature photographer’s paradise, the Osa Peninsula in southern Costa Rica represents the largest tract of Pacific lowland rainforest left in Central America. Roy Toft has been exploring this region since 1990 and is currently finishing a book project devoted to showcasing and protecting this unique region. With a background in wildlife and conservation biology, Roy focuses solely on creating wild images that convey a sense of the animals’ character and spirit. His images have been featured in Audubon, National Geographic, Smithsonian and other notable publications to advance conservation efforts globally.
