Baja Whales and Sea of Cortez, Mexico with Wendy Shattil
January 23 - February 7$5895
An 11-day/10-night expedition among the scattered islands along the Baja peninsula begins with an overland visit to the gray whale breeding and birthing lagoon of Magdalena Bay, with up-close whale encounters! Following that adventure of a lifetime, we’ll board the M/V Westward to walk along desert island ridges and palm-lined arroyos, visit a remote fishing village and kayak into a mangrove lagoon.
Upon landing at the San Jose del Cabo airport, we’ll be driven by van to La Paz, Baja California to begin a three day land-based trip. From here we travel west across the peninsula to Magdalena Bay, one of Baja’s three gray whale birthing and breeding sites. We’ll make two trips into the lagoon in small open boats to see, photograph and perhaps touch, Baja’s friendly gray whales. All costs for accommodations, transportation, meals and whale watching expenses are included.
Following our land-based adventures, we’ll spend seven days and six nights cruising to Loreto on the 86-foot classic wooden boat, the M/V Westward. Along the way there will be visits to beaches made famous by John Steinbeck’s account of his collection trip through the region with Ed Ricketts in the 1940’s. We’ll walk deserted beaches, kayak through twisting mangrove lagoons, and hike trails across unpopulated and remote islands. We’ll look for the three species of great whales that are encountered here: blue whales, sperm whales and humpback whales and will watch for the spectacular leaps of dolphins and mysterious mobula rays, which fling themselves out of the water unexpectedly. We’ll float by a nesting colony of prehistoric-looking frigate birds and kayak the turquoise waters of shallow bays for sea turtles and diving brown pelicans.
Wendy works with all levels of photographers; from participants with the latest 35mm SLR, to point-and-shoot cameras and cell phones, she and an experienced naturalist help every guest make the most out of the experience.
