Summit Super Session: Joe McDonald

March 2 @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm

The 2017 Nature Photography Summit and Trade Show, March 2-4 in Jacksonville, FL is a gathering of hundreds of photographers, photo editors and other members of the nature photography community with a focus on learning and inspiration. For 2017, 8 Summit Super Sessions are offered before and after the conference for those wanting even more.

Capturing Hidden Worlds with Flash and Camera Traps
Joe McDonald

Using flash, both in TTL and Manual Mode, in conjunction with camera traps or triggers, opens up an entirely new world of nature photography. These techniques allow one to photograph high-speed action, nocturnal wildlife, and subjects impossible to photograph by the conventional method of the photographer tripping the camera manually. This super session will explain how both TTL and Manual flash work and the considerations one must make for high-speed flash photography. We’ll cover the relationship between ambient light and flash, the role power ratios play, and how to most effectively use your flash, even for normal shooting. Virtually every high-speed flash application can be made with the traditional hotshoe flash equipment that you probably already own.

We’ll then explain how flash applies to camera trap and high-speed flash applications. We’ll be covering infrared camera triggers, high-speed shutters, and how to set up effective camera traps to capture a variety of subjects, from flying insects and flying bats to stalking ocelots and striking rattlesnakes. The equipment used for these techniques are all readily available commercially, and most items are quite affordable.

Summit Super Sessions are $75/each and can be added with or without the full Summit registration.
