Winter in Yellowstone is as close to a winter wonderland as you can possibly get. Snow and cold transform the landscape into something completely different from what you’ll see in the summer months. Join us for a completely unique photography experience!

Although the bears will be hibernating, other animals like wolves, foxes, and coyotes become easier to spot and photograph. There’s also the possibility to see one of the famous Madison River bobcats that feeds on waterfowl living in the thermally-fed warm river. Bald eagles, river otters, and of course bison will be possible as well. Thermal features of the geyser basins also take on a whole new appearance, as their steam freezes on everything around them – creating a very photogenic frost.

This is an instructional photography workshop, not simply a photo tour. This trip is good for photographers of any skill level. An online course is included with the price, if you’d like to get more familiar with the basics.

We will be looking for more than just a “proof” shot of an animal, just to say you saw it. We will focus on getting more meaningful shots of those animals. We will look for great light, key behaviors, non-distracting backgrounds, vibrant colors, and other elements that improve your photographs. You will learn the fundamentals of photography as art, including the elements of art, and principles of design. You will learn how to find the best locations, when the best light occurs, and how to locate various wildlife. We will also work on the technical side of the camera, looking at exposure, sharpness, dynamic range, depth of field, and more.
