Event Details –

Utah is home to some of the darkest skies in the country and features surreal desert landscapes.  Join instructors Peter Zelinka and Mike Ince for a 3-day (night) astrophotography workshop in Arches National Park, Utah.  As its name implies, Arches National Park is a wonderland of beautiful natural arches, towers, and red rock formations.  During this workshop you will capture the Milky Way galaxy while surrounded by the stunning rock formations found only in Utah.

About the Workshop-

This workshop will take place during a New Moon, the perfect time to see the Milky Way!  Since the skies will be incredibly dark, we will focus on different techniques to capture as much light as possible and reduce image grain.  While on-location, Peter and Mike will demonstrate their preferred shooting methods first, then guide you through the whole process.

We will be hiking to our locations each night, so sturdy footwear is recommended.  However, most destinations will be less than 1 mile from the trailhead.  You will want to bring a good headlamp and backpack.

Participants should be intimately familiar with their cameras, since we will be operating them in the dark.  Due to the class size, and the sensitivity of astrophotography, headlamp usage will be kept to a minimum while we are shooting.

During this workshop you will learn how to plan your own Milky Way photoshoots, which apps to use, the correct camera settings, how to focus at night, how to use a star tracker, how to do a star trails image, plus multiple Photoshop and Adobe Camera RAW workflows.

We will have an intensive schedule in order to get the most out of this workshop.  Post-processing lessons will begin each day at noon and run for 2-4 hours.  Since we will be staying up late, you have a lot of freedom in the morning.  You may wish to explore the nearby National Parks and BLM lands for sunrise / early morning light.  Our lessons will start promptly at noon, though.

After editing, you will have time to get dinner and ready for the night.  We will be leaving the hotel each night around 6pm.  That will give us enough time to drive to the locations and set up before it gets too dark.

Join us in June for an incredible experience under the stars!

Leaders –

Peter Zelinka is a nomadic nature photographer originally from Northeast Ohio.  As an avid hiker and backpacker, Peter spent most his free time exploring the forests of Ohio and Western Pennsylvania.  After spending countless hours hiking with a point-and-shoot camera, Peter eventually got more interested in photography.

In June 2016, Peter quit his full-time IT job to pursue photography.  He spent the next 4 months living out of his car, traveling across the country on a 15,000-mile road trip.  Upon returning home, he began teaching photography lessons and working part time at YM camera.  With the Total Solar Eclipse rapidly approaching in August of 2017, Peter hit the road again, spending the next 3 months traveling across America.

Peter is currently working at YM camera, teaching private lessons, and developing workshop content for 2019.  He will be back on the road again in May!
