NANPA Showcase 2019

How do your images stack up against the best of the best? Start planning your next shot for the 2019 NANPA Showcase Competition. Enter the NANPA Showcase 2019 competition for prizes, national exposure, bragging rights, and recognition as the best in the nature photography industry. Images will be selected by a jury panel of three industry notables. Submissions for the NANPA Showcase 2019 will be accepted between August 1 and September 17 (11:00pm, Eastern Time) 2018. All submissions must be digital and will be uploaded via the NANPA website.

The entry fee is $10 per image (or 6 images for $50). Images must be submitted and paid in groups of 6 to get the special rate (6 for $50, 12 for $100, etc.) There is no limit to the number of images a NANPA photographer may enter. You must be a NANPA member to participate in the Showcase competition.

Image Categories:

Mammals – Includes all mammals, land and sea

Birds – Includes all birds

Scapes – Includes landscape, plantscape, seascape, atmosphere, weather, etc.

Macro, Micro, and All Other Wildlife – Includes images of non-bird, non-mammal wildlife as well as close-ups of any subject. Close-ups are intimate views, tightly framed, or close examinations of subjects in nature.

Altered Reality – The image must obviously display a change in natural color, form, shape, or any combination of these. It must be enhanced or transformed beyond the way the subject appears in nature.

Cash prizes will be given out for each of the five categories as follows:

$350 – Best of Show in each category

$250 – 1st Runner-up in each category

110 Judges’ Choice awards of $200 each will be given to images highly ranked across all categories

Top 250 Prize Package includes:

  • Image included in a searchable image gallery on the NANPA website
  • Opportunity to be included in NANPA promotional materials

Top 100 Prize Package includes:

  • Image included in Expressions and photographer receives a printed copy of Expressions

  • Opportunity to be included in NANPA promotional materials
  • Featured on the NANPA home page slideshow and promoted through social media throughout 2019

Top 20 Prize Package includes:

  • Image included in Expressions and photographer receives a printed copy of Expressions

NANPA Showcase Winners Earn the Spotlight

Expressions – This prestigious, high-quality journal displays the very best photographs selected from thousands of submissions. Expressions is distributed to more than 3,000 NANPA members and photo buyers electronically.

Image of the Day – NANPA’s Instagram page (@nanpapix) highlights member images which include photographer’s contact information. Note: Instagram participation is optional – Showcase entrants indicate on the Showcase entry form if they wish to participate in the Instagram promotions.

Winner’s Spotlight – Q&A feature on NANPA’s blog.

Portfolio Display – NANPA’s website features a professional portfolio display of Showcase winner’s images (up to 20).

Featured Photographer – NANPA’s website spotlights winning Showcase photographer’s including biography information, headshots, and website links.

National Exposure – NANPA partners with other media outlets throughout the year to raise the appreciation, visibly, and rights of nature photography.

Melissa Groo:  is a wildlife photographer, writer, speaker, and educator. She’s an Associate Fellow with the International League of Conservation Photographers, and a contributing editor for Audubon magazine. She writes a regular column on wildlife photography, “Wild By Nature,” for Outdoor Photographer magazine. Deeply passionate about ethics in nature photography, she served as Chair of NANPA’s Ethics Committee for three years. She recently retired as Chair, but still remains on the Ethics Committee, and in addition serves on NANPA’s Conservation Committee. Melissa has judged numerous contests, including the National Audubon Society, and Big Picture Natural World.

George Lepp: One of North America’s best-known contemporary outdoor and nature photographers and a leader in the field of digital imaging, George Lepp is the author of many books and hundreds of nationally and internationally published articles about the creative, ethical, and technical aspects of nature photography. He is field editor of Outdoor Photographer magazine, where his “Tech Tips” column is widely read. His photography is extensively published and exhibited, and represented by Getty Images, Corbis, AgStock, and Photo Researchers. Lepp is one of the first members of Canon USA’s Explorers of Light program, featuring the industry’s most influential photographers. He has presented hundreds of lectures and led workshops all over the world, and often serves as a judge of international photography competitions. A founder and Fellow of the North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA), Lepp has won many awards for his work, including Photo Media’s Photography Person of the Year and the Photographic Society of America’s prestigious Progress Award. First trained in wildlife and wildlands management, Lepp later earned a BA and honorary MSc from Brooks Institute of Photography. Joe and Mary Ann McDonald – are the most prolific and active husband-wife wildlife and nature photography team in the United States today with over 30 years of experience in the photography profession. At least half of each year is spent in the field, leading photo tours and safaris to Africa, South America, India, and other exotic locations, as well as various tours and workshops in the US. They conduct their Digital Complete Nature Photo Course and Advanced (Flash) Courses at their studio at Hoot Hollow, in central Pennsylvania.

Joe and Mary Ann are founding members of NANPA (North American Nature Photography Association), and they have both been involved as Master of Ceremony, keynote speakers, workshop presenters and other service roles at the annual summits. Joe is a member of POWA (PA Outdoor Writers Association) and OWAA (Outdoor Writers of America Association). Mary Ann regularly visits schools in a Visiting Author program, where she inspires young students in writing, photography, conservation and natural history studies.
