ECUADOR BIRD PHOTO TOUR, JAN 7-19, 2015

Join Nate Chappell to photograph the many species of Ecuadorian hummingbirds and a lot of other great birds. My multi-flash setups will allow you to get stunning images of hummingbirds with just an intermediate zoom or telephoto lens and 1 dedicated flash unit. I use Nikon SB-26 slave flashes which are fired automatically by any type of flash (Canon, Nikon or other). This trip includes 5 nights at Sachatamia Lodge in Mindo with hummingbird and fruit feeding setups. Staying in Mindo gets us close to a great variety of birds and hummingbirds. In addition to 20-25 species of hummingbirds we should have good photo opportunities with antpittas, toucanets and Toucan Barbet at close range at Paz de las Aves. We spend 3 nights at Guango Lodge, probably the premier lodge for doing multi flash photography and the best location for photographing Sword-billed Hummingbird, we also spend 2 nights near Quito photographing Giant Hummingbird, Black-tailed Trainbearer and others We also spend nights at Bellavista Lodge in the Tandayapa Valley. Here we will concentrate on cloud forest specialties like Plate-billed Mountain Toucan and Masked Trogon as well as do more multi-flash photography at nearby Alambi Lodge.

Nate and his Ecuadorian wife Angie have spent an average of 2 months a year photographing the birds of Ecuador the past 8 years, so we know the birds and locations there extremely well. Nate will give presentations on photographing birds in the wild and using flash for bird photography. He will help you make the most of your trip with in field instruction and advice. Nate's multi-flash hummingbird images have regularly placed in the Nanpa Showcase and have been widely published.

Spectacular species that we should have good photo opps with include:
Sword-billed Hummingbird
Velvet-purple Coronet
Violet-tailed Sylph
Long-tailed Sylph
Booted Rackettail
several species of Antpitta
Crimson-rumped Toucanet
Toucan Barbet
Blue-winged Mountain Tanager
Masked Trogon
Pale-mandibled Aracari
and many, many more - Ecuador has over 1,500 species of birds in a country that is about the size of Colorado. Besides birds we will be on the lookout for mammals and other animals. If the Spectacled Bears have been showing in the Mindo area we will make a day trip to photograph them. The newly discovered Olingito and a few other mammal species can be photographed at night at the feeding station at Bellavista Lodge.

The cost of the photography workshop/tour is $4,300 and includes all transportation within Ecuador, lodging, meals, instruction and guiding, $200 single supplement. It does not include travel to and from Quito, Ecuador. The cost of a nonphotographer spouse/companion joining is $3,800. Compare the value of this 12 day tour with Nate who has led many Ecuador photo tours and spends months a year there with those led by other professional photographers who have spent little time there and charge much more per day.
