WA Bald Eagles and Birds, June 16-20, 2012
3 Attachment(s)

Join Nate Chappell and Ken Archer for a workshop to photograph the birds of Hood Canal, Washington. This is a spectacular location where large numbers (50-100) of Bald Eagles and Great Blue Herons congregate during the low tides of spring and summer to feed on spawning fish. The Bald Eagles and herons fight with each other on a regular basis here, the only location I have seen this happen regularly. It's a great spot for getting flight shots of eagles and shots of eagles interacting with each other and with herons. All in a beautiful setting with the Olympic Mountains rising in the background above Hood Canal. We will also take a boat trip to see and photograph Orcas, visit a Pigeon Guillimot colony and spend some time photographing Wood Ducks and Northwest songbirds.

Here is the summarized itinerary:
June 16th - Arrival and pick up at Seattle-Tacoma airport. At 3pm we will have a 2 hour presentation on photographing birds in the wild with a question and answer period. Next we will visit a local park to photograph Wood Ducks and Canada Geese with their broods.

June 17th - Morning photography session with the Bald Eagles and Great Blue Herons at Hood Canal. In the afternoon we will visit another location to photograph a Pigeon Guillimot colony and photograph Harlequin Ducks. Evening presentation on using flash for bird photography.

June 18th - Morning photography session with eagles and herons followed by an afternoon trip to Port Townsend, WA where we will board a boat to see and photograph Orcas and other wildlife.

June 19th - A morning trip to a local residence with lots of feeders and songbirds including Steller's Jay and Chestnut-backed Chickadee. After that another session photographing the eagles and herons at Hood Canal. Afternoon image review and critique.

June 20th - One more morning session with the eagles and herons followed by return to the airport for your trip home.

Nate and Ken are experienced instructors. Nate is an expert at handholding long lenses for flight photography and at using flash for bird photography. Nate's images have placed in the last 3 years of the Nanpa Showcase. Ken Archer is a former first place category winner in Nature's Best Photography contest and overall winner of the Wyoming Wildlife Photography contest with 25 years of experience photographing birds and wildlife. They will be giving presentations on photographing birds in the wild and using flash to photograph birds.

The cost of the workshop is $1,645, including lodging, local transportation, guiding, instruction and property use fees. Single supplement is $200. To see the details of the trip see To see images that I have taken there see
