Default Africa Photo Kit Help

Thanks in advance to anyone who replies to this thread. Near the end of the year I will be taking what looks to be an extended trip into Southern Africa. I'm looking at 2-3 months there. Starting in South Africa and hopefully getting to Namibia, Botswana and Madagascar and possibly some other countries. I want to be able to capture as much of the diversity of the region as possible--the people, landscapes etc... but definitely with a focus on wildlife. My problem is this...I will essentially be backpacking and trying to travel as cheaply as possible and I'm struggling to know what photo gear to bring to get some good shots but still be comfortable and enjoy my surroundings. I know I will have to compromise something. Does anyone have experience with this type of trip to Africa that could shed some light on these issues for me? Along with wide angle, medium length zooms and macro gear I have a 70-200 2.8 IS and the 300 2.8 prime with both the 1.4X and 2X tele-extenders. And I am not against getting a new lens if there is a long but lightweight alternative to the 300 that people have had success with. Any help is appreciated!
