I'll answer my own question from what I have learned from other sites.

The iPad is not quite ready yet for heavy duty downloading of large image files while traveling.

Although you can attach a USB external drive, it is limited to 32GB capacity - too small to be practical when on a photo trip. To meet my 3-copy requirement for my images would require way too many external drives.

I Also understand that downloading files to the iPad is much slower than downloading to a notebook computer.

So, all things considered, it looks like we still need to lug around our heavy old notebooks for the time being.

MacBook Air anyone???
