ECUADOR BIRD PHOTO TOUR, NOVEMBER 28-DECEMBER 10, 2013
AMAZON SANI LODGE EXTENSION, DECEMBER 10-15, 2013
Join Nate Chappell to photograph the many species of Ecuadorian hummingbirds and a lot of other great birds. My multi-flash setups will allow you to get stunning images of hummingbirds with just an intermediate zoom or telephoto lens and 1 dedicated flash unit. I use Nikon SB-26 slave flashes which are fired automatically by any type of flash (Canon, Nikon or other). This trip includes 4 nights at Sachatamia Lodge in Mindo with hummingbird and fruit feeding setups. Staying in Mindo gets us close to a great variety of birds and hummingbirds. In addition to 20-25 species of hummingbirds we should have good photo opportunities with antpittas, toucanets and Toucan Barbet at close range at Paz de las Aves and we will also photograph at Mindo Loma. We spend 3 nights at Guango Lodge, probably the premier lodge for doing multi flash photography and the best location for photographing Sword-billed Hummingbird, we also spend 3 nights in Otavalo visiting the best native markets in Ecuador and photographing native waterfowl on Laguna San Pablo. The tour finishes with 2 nights at Bellavista Lodge in the Tandayapa Valley. Here we will concentrate on cloud forest specialties like Plate-billed Mountain Toucan and Masked Trogon as well as do more multi-flash photography at nearby Alambi Lodge.
Nate and his Ecuadorian wife Angie have spent an average of 2 months a year photographing the birds of Ecuador the past 8 years, so we know the birds and locations there extremely well. Nate will give presentations on photographing birds in the wild and using flash for bird photography. He will help you make the most of your trip with in field instruction and advice. Nate's multi-flash hummingbird images have twice placed in the Nanpa Showcase recently.
Spectacular species that we should have good photo opps with include:
Blue-winged Mountain Tanager
and many, many more - Ecuador has over 1,500 species of birds in a country that is about the size of Colorado.
The cost of the photography workshop/tour is $4,300 and includes all transportation within Ecuador, lodging, meals, instruction and guiding. It does not include travel to and from Quito, Ecuador. The cost of a nonphotographer spouse/companion joining is $3,200. We will have an excellent birder helping out on the trip as well as great local guides.
The Amazon Sani Lodge Extension gets you into the Western edge of the Amazon basin. Sani Lodge is located on an oxbow lake off of the Napo River, one of the Amazon River's large tributaries. Hoatzin and a lot of other great birds will be photographed here.
We still have a couple of spaces left on this trip and because it begins on Thanksgiving, we are giving participants the option to start the tour a few days later, if this option is taken we will prorate the price of the tour.
We have also set our dates for 2014, they are November 1-13 for the main Ecuador tour and November 13-18 for the Amazon extension.
