I will be visiting Olympic NP for a week this June, really looking forward especially to the seascapes and tidal pools. I think I know most of the hot spots, but if anyone has any must shoot locations I'd welcome the hints!
Also a question for anyone who has done a orca watching trip around the San Juan islands - I see NOAA has unfortunately imposed new regulations effective this May which double the minimum viewing distance to 200 yards for orcas. I was really looking forward to this trip, but wonder if it is still worth doing (I define worth doing as getting good shots, not simply observing). Perhaps someone who did an orca trip while you could get within 100 yards could share their thoughts?
You probably already know about these, but my favorites are:
- Quinault Rainforest Trail
- Ruby Beach, Second Beach, Rialto Beach
- Hoh Rainforest (Hoh River Trail as well as Hoh Rainforest Trail)
- Point of Arches (incredible for tidepools)
- Cape Flattery Viewpoint
- Sol Duc Falls
- Hurricane Ridge (June is too early for the wildflowers, but views of the Olympic Mountains are great)
Thanks, will update so other photographers can also find these great spots.
The Cape Flattery images were shot with a Lee big stopper (10-stop neutral density). Would have liked to make it to ShiShi.point of arches, next trip!
As you said, Oneonta was choked with logs, too bad because it was gorgeous but even getting to the start of the gorge would have required a swim through chest-high water then a loose log scramble, I did not see a safe way to do it - especially as I was hiking solo.
