Default Ecuador Hummingbirds and More, Jan 7-15, 2012

Join Nate Chappell and multi flash photography expert Bill Forbes to photograph the many species of Ecuadorian hummingbirds. We will be staying at 2 excellent lodges, Septimo Paraiso in Mindo and Guango Lodge. Staying in Mindo gets us close to a great variety of birds and hummingbirds. In addition to 20-25 species of hummingbirds we should have good photo opportunities with antpittas, toucanets and Toucan Barbet at close range at Paz de las Aves and we will also photograph at Mindo Loma. Guango Lodge is probably the premier lodge for doing multi flash photography and the best location for photographing Sword-billed Hummingbird.

The stars of the show are the hummers and the primary purpose of the trip is to get stunning flight shots of them by using multi-flash setups. We will have 3-4 mutli-flash setups going at each of the lodges we are staying at. 2 photographers can shoot on a setup at the same time. There are a maximum of 6 photographers. You don't need a huge telephoto lens to get stunning shots of these hummers as you are quite close to them. An intermediate telephoto lens like a 100-400mm or 70-200mm with a teleconverter works great. Bill is the inventor of the Phototrap and a high speed flash photography expert. Nate and Angie Chappell spend a few months each year living in Ecuador and photographing the birds there. Nate's image of a Chestnut-breasted Coronet taken at Guango on last year's tour was a Nanpa Showcase selection for this year. Nate will give presentations on photographing birds in the wild and fill flash as well as how to shoot at the setups.

Spectacular species that we should have good photo opps with include:
Sword-billed Hummingbird
Velvet-purple Coronet
Violet-tailed Sylph
Long-tailed Sylph
Booted Rackettail
Giant Antpitta
Crimson-rumped Toucanet
Toucan Barbet
Blue-winged Mountain Tanager
and many, many more.

The cost of the photography workshop/tour is $2,795 and includes all transportation within Ecuador, lodging, meals, instruction and guiding. It does not include travel to and from Quito, Ecuador. The cost of a nonphotographer spouse/companion joining is $1,795. We will hire a birdwatching guide for any spouses/companions that wish to go birding. Angie Chappell will be available to take non photographer spouses/companions on alternative trips such as going to the markets in Quito.
