“Want to see my frog magazine, grandmommy?” my granddaughter, Shannon Elizabeth, said as she waved a beautiful issue of Ranger Rick magazine at me. We settled in for several cherished minutes as she showed me frogs so new to her but so familiar to me. NANPA member Susan McElhinney, as director of photography for Ranger Rick, is responsible for the images that appear there.

The lizard book that Shannon brought out next credited photographers I've seen at NANPA Summits many times over the years. Both publications were produced with the help of NANPA members. NANPA members bring nature photography to the public. We bring close-up images of flowers to local coffee shop walls. We bring African safari images to travel brochures and DVDs. We bring stories of drought and contaminated water to the news. We bring lizards and frogs to children through magazines and books.

NANPA is comprised of a unique group of individuals. We are people with a passion for nature and we have a common interest—nature photography. We use our photography to teach children and adults, and to motivate world leaders to make changes. Each of us does it in a different way and each of us reaches a different audience, but together we make a difference.

Over the past 12 months in my role as president of NANPA, I've seen photos from NANPA members in countless magazines and books. Editors on many of those publications are NANPA members. I've received emails from members who are working near and far documenting creatures, people, natural wonders and man-made messes. It warms my heart to see each person contributing in his or her own way to bring nature photography to the public.

It's also been a treat to see the work of countless volunteers who have donated hundreds of hours to bring education, entertainment, news, products and opportunities to members. Staff have pushed the envelope to give value to each member. The efforts often have been monumental, and the achievements, grand. NANPA knits people together in an abiding and supportive nature photography community.

Continue your work in the coming year and lend your support to our new president, Richard Halperin. Richard is a great leader who brings a wealth of talent to NANPA. As an organization knitted together by common threads, we can make NANPA strong while we bring nature photography to the public.
