President's Message
September/October 2003

Technology Issues
by Michael Francis, President

I don't know about you, but the first thing that comes to mind when I think of a nature photographer is technology. Sad thing is, I'm only half kidding. Our world has become infused with techno-speak, and like it or not, it's affecting us all. Some of the more adventurous among us have jumped wholeheartedly aboard the tech wagon, while others have spent the last year hiding out in a cave and hoping it will all blow over.

But guess what? It won't. We've got to deal with it, even if we're not well equipped at the moment. After all, nature photographers don't always have the wherewithal to plug in our laptops. Some of us still think of a laptop as that large lens we're balancing on our knees while chasing down a sunset in our 4WD.

How do we find a nice balance between becoming one with nature and signing on for a T-1 line? I, for one, don't have any answers. I do know that if I plan to stay a professional photographer, I'm going to have to learn at least the minimum I need to exist. I'm going to have to get my images on the web. I'm going to have to learn how to email and I'm going to have to get a laptop that can exist off my car battery. Do I like it? Not really. Am I going to do it? You bet.

I'm dead set against letting the technology rule me. Instead, I am going to master it one day, hopefully before they change all the rules again!
