President's Message Annual Summit Thoughts Before the first Annual Summit in 1995, I knew many photographers only through their credit lines. I could count those I knew personally on one hand. At that Summit I found I was not unique. My experience was echoed by hundreds of others, and all of us were happy to finally come together and put faces to names. There was an instant friendship based on the common interests of outdoors, nature and photography. This would not have happened without the insight and efforts of the founding fathers. NANPA needed to be. Ten years later, stepping into the position of president has put quite a different complexion on the 2004 Annual Summit for me. I am still able to reunite with old friends and acquaintances—a highlight for sure. But the duties as incoming president precluded me from being able to attend most of the breakout sessions or any of the pre- or post-Summit workshops and field trips. What this office did afford me was the opportunity to meet countless more attendees than usual, many on their initiative. Some expressed enthusiasm and some concerns. Some had suggestions and others wanted to get involved. There was comradeship brought about by the opportunity for us all to be together and share face-to-face conversations on our goals, achievements, problems, and philosophies, and maybe tell a few jokes. Once again at this Summit, there was an intangible commodity that exemplifies all NANPA Summits. It is an infectious energy that permeates through the entire body of attendees. It is this force that is so difficult to convey when trying to describe a NANPA Summit. Every year when I return home I'm energized. I'm inspired. Creativity seems to be endless. My convictions for nature, art, and the environment are reconfirmed and strengthened. And I know I have hundreds of friends out there who share the same experience. Dewitt inspired us all - this is what puts "juice in our cameras." None of this would happen without the countless hours put in by the volunteers on the Summit Advisory Council and the staff at headquarters. We the members are indebted to their dedication and owe them all a well-earned Thank You!
