President's Message
May/June 2005

Keeping Up
by Darrell Gulin, President

I don't have to tell any of you, pro, semi-pro or amateur, that the business of nature photography in today's world is way more complicated than ever. Not only are we, as photographers, expected to be masters of our craft, but we also have to be expert at scanning, digital file management, website technology and pricing mediums that haven't yet been invented. We are expected to be as adept in front of a computer screen as we are in the field. Who would have ever thought that our passions would become so technical?

But that's what the world has come to now. The rules keep changing and we struggle to keep at least close enough to give the appearance that we know what we are doing. Where having a personal website was once optional, it now is almost a requirement. And forget about not having an email address - you have to practically live in a cave NOT to have one. Or, two!

As an organization of nature photography lovers, we count among our membership many who must work within this ever-changing milieu. To accommodate members' needs, we have some projects in the works. Our website is a work in progress, a wonderful resource for a photographer wishing to market his or her work or simply a way to keep up with what's happening in our world. A committee of dedicated volunteers is currently working on a business practices manual that should prove enormously helpful to all NANPA members. Be on the lookout for its release sometime in the next year.

One of the most wonderful benefits of a NANPA membership is the tremendous networking it affords. Use it to your advantage, especially in your business dealings. If you don't know the answer, contact a fellow member who might. Your best teacher is someone who has already been there.
