President's Message
July/August 2005

Committee Reports
by Darrell Gulin, President

As I write this, on the first of June, I am preparing for the second face-to-face Board meeting of the year. NANPA has an outstanding Board of Directors as well as volunteer committees that handle much of the day-to-day issues. Committee reports and requests are some of the topics we will tackle at the July meeting.

Unfortunately, I don't have enough space to cover the accomplishments of all our committees, but I'd like to address a few.

1. The Summit Committee, chaired by Kathy Adams Clark, has an outstanding group of keynote speakers planned for us in Denver. To produce a successful Summit requires year-round work. I see this almost daily in the myriad conference calls and emails that take place regarding the Summit. The committee is already at work planning the location of the 2007 Summit. Based on your comments, the locations will be concentrated in the south, southwest and Gulf states. I will help to ensure that the locations take into account the very best photographic opportunities.

2. The Environment Committee, with Tom Carlisle and Kevin Fitz Patrick as co-chairs, are working on a conservation event at the Denver Summit, which they will co-sponsor with The Nature Conservancy. Read more about it in the Environment Committee report in this issue.

3. The High School Scholarship Committee, under the leadership of Lou Nettelhorst, is now taking applications and nominations for the ten scholarships to be offered. Do you know of a high school student who you might sponsor? See the NANPA website, www.nanpa.org, for more information.

4. Speaking of the website, have you visited it lately? The Communications Committee-Web, chaired by John Lock, is doing an outstanding job. Look at the super images in the Members' Showcase.

5. Communications Committee-Print—Wow! Currents is current. We are looking into a journal for more visual presence. What more can I say about the outstanding job the entire committee is doing? Co-editor Sharon Cohen-Powers keeps me in line, ensuring I meet my deadlines for writing the “President's Message” for each issue of Currents.

Let this short overview be a reminder of how our committees keep NANPA up and running.

In closing, I want to thank Jess Lee for taking over the Resource Relations Committee; Susan Bailey for chairing the Membership Committee and enlisting a very active group that is addressing the most important issue of membership. Thanks to John Nuhn who presides over the NANPA Foundation. And to all the remaining committee chairs—Alison Jones, Awards; Linda Helm, College Scholarship Program; Niki Barrie, Communications-Print; Deborah Free, Development; Chris Gamel, Education; Joshua Baker, Ethics; Richard Halperin, Finance; Shirley Nuhn and Lynda Richardson, History; Cristina Mittermeier, International; Michael Francis, Nominations and Elections; Robin Brandt, Publications and Products; Jane Kinne, Refuge Blind; Suzan Brand, Regional Events; and, Gabby Salazar, Youth Action - you are appreciated. -
