President's Message Digital Dilemma Ahhh, how much has changed in just one short year. If this were last year, my column might be focusing on when to embrace the new technologies. But by now, most of you have already figured that out. Now the question is, "How much?" How much longer should I keep shooting film? How much would it cost me to run two systems at once: analog and digital? How much time do I need to devote to my business now, and how much am I willing to spend to have someone else do it? How much do I want to invest in my website? New equipment? Backup systems? The list is never-ending. Photography has always been an evolving medium. But for me, at least, the evolution is moving at breakneck speed. For the first time, I now see how the black-and-white shooters must have felt when color came along. Did it move as fast back then? Was there as much to consider in making the switch? Several years ago, you were an oddball if you didn’t have an email address. Now, legitimacy is tied to a personal website. What’s next? If I knew that answer, I would become a rich man. Guaranteed. But as one of those who is still kicking and screaming at the technology, and who actually goes days without checking email, I have nevertheless made a complete switch to shooting digitally, except when I use my 6x17 pan camera and my 4x5. I have managed to run a photo business without being tied to a computer, but I’m not sure how long I’ll be able to keep this up. For those of you who refuse to join the masses, I urge you to reconsider. If you plan on making a living from your photography, you have to figure out a way to give the appearance of being “with it.” But if you’re just shooting for pleasure or for those few sources that are happy to work with your film, go for it! And enjoy every minute! I envy you.
