September/October 2006

Mid-year Board Report
by Al Sieg, President

Recently, the Board of Directors met for its mid-year meeting. Over a period of two-and-a-half days we worked to implement current activities and to plan for the future. We had a great meeting with Board members volunteering their time and talents to promote NANPA. Our immediate past year is cause for celebration. We exceeded expectations at the Summit, membership is at an all time high, and we launched the successful Boston Road Show (more are planned) and West Virginia Regional Event.

The Budget

To build on these successes, we passed a balanced but aggressive budget for the fiscal year 2006-2007 that incorporates many innovations. Detailed plans for the 2007 Summit in Palm Springs included the approval of keynote speakers: Darrell Gulin, Frans Lanting, Joe and Mary Ann McDonald, Rick Sammon and Kevin Schafer. The Board also approved lowering the registration fee for 2007. We started planning future Summit locations for the next three years to enable members to coordinate the sites and dates with their personal itineraries.

Following the success of the first stops on 2006 Road Show, two more are planned for this year. Check the website for information. Likewise, we have chosen to continue our Regional Events. We hope both of these programs will meet the needs of members, especially those who cannot attend the Annual Summit.

The Committees

Many of the committees presented new ideas for approval:
  • The Environment Committee will continue its outreach event at the Summit in 2007. (See “Second Annual Outreach Event at the 2007 Summit” on page 9 of this issue.)
  • The Education Committee will study ways to enable NANPA to produce a high school teacher course.
  • The Membership Committee proposal for including a booth at other nature photo-related events was approved along with the funds to produce materials.
  • The Marketing and Development Committee’s proposed programs to increase the awareness of NANPA at trade shows and other venues along with a new marketing plan was given the green light.
  • The Communications Committee was asked to investigate the updating of our logo.
  • The Youth Action Committee showed a prototype of a photography resource packet that will be available to our young members.
  • The International Committee was charged with a new mission to help with our international relations and overseas representation.

Other Board Actions

  • A task report was accepted to create a cache of images for promotion of NANPA events, such as brochures and ads.
  • A new Policy and Procedures Manual was produced and approved.

New Concepts

Several new concepts were presented for discussion. A task force was appointed to study the idea of creating regions and regional representatives for NANPA. Another group was appointed to look into offering NANPA members travel insurance as well as insurance for professional members who offer educational and photo tour opportunities. The Board created the Board Recognition Awards for dedicated individuals who give their time and talent to the association in various ways. (These awards are separate from the awards that go through the Awards Committee.) Several Board Recognition Awards were approved for presentation at the next Summit opening ceremonies.
