NANPA Getting Involved
by Kathy Adams Clark, President

NANPA is growing and thriving. The organization is working for you as members and for nature photography, both behind-the-scenes and publicly. This is evident in many different ways.

NANPA is an active member of the Imagery Alliance. This is a coalition of photography organizations working on ways to protect a photographer's copyright. There is a growing disregard in the world for copyright laws. The U.S. Congress will probably pass legislation that will allow photographs to be declared “orphan works” when their owners cannot be found and identified after a reasonable search. What is “reasonable” is the point of contention.

Many photographers think this proposed legislation doesn't pertain to them since their photos aren't used on billboards or in perfume ads. But an image placed on a website can be easily snatched and emailed to thousands of people around the world. Move the image through a couple of software programs and the metadata is stripped out leaving no trace of ownership. That photo becomes an orphan.

Recently, NANPA sent legal papers to a web provider hosting a Japanese site that featured images stolen from NANPA members. Strong copyright laws allowed us to call on the infringers to take the images down. NANPA is working with a variety of other photography groups to ensure that you have laws and methods to protect your work. (See article, p. 4)

There's a certain amount of strength when we represent 3,000 members who are passionate about the natural world. NANPA's Resource Relations Committee intervened in three issues recently that involved parks and refuges. Our organization was able to make a difference because of our members.

As the connecting point for the nature photography community, NANPA not only brings together its members, but also connects members with legislators, park personnel with constituencies, and photographers with teachers, tour leaders and photo buyers. Buyers are connected to stunning images through the annual journal, members' slide show and NANPA website. Speakers are connected with audiences that stretch across the country and the world. Equipment manufacturers connect with idea generators and suppliers connect with buyers.

The list of connections and accomplishments is growing as the organization grows. I'm thrilled you are with us as a member. Remind the other nature enthusiasts in your circle that they should join NANPA. There's strength when we are all connected.
