President's Message
January/February 2008

Welcome to Ripples
by Kathy Adams Clark, President

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to Ripples, the electronic newsletter of the North American Nature Photography Association. This simple little newsletter is the product of years worth of talking, researching and idea generation. Many people contributed their time, talent and opinions to make this wonderful product.

Back in 2002, when I first came on the Board of Directors of NANPA, there was discussion about how to make the NANPA newsletter better. Our bimonthly newsletter Currents was well edited and arrived on time but some wanted more. A year or so later, board member Steve Maka brought a mock-up of a full color magazine to one of our meetings. I remember Steve holding that magazine up and saying “we can produce something like this.”

The board talked and explored options for a few more years with the Communications Committee leading the way. Finally Sharon Cohen-Powers and Niki Barrie of Loupe Media won the confidence of the Board and were given the green light to make Currents a true magazine filled with stunning photography and writing. The premiere issue of Currents arrived in mailboxes in December to glowing reviews.

Ripples was a by-product of reformulating Currents. The Board wanted to ensure there was a method in place to deliver more immediate news to members. Sharon and Niki surveyed the membership to determine what kind of news people wanted in electronic format and the result is Ripples.

We owe a round of applause to the members of the Communications (Print) Committee who volunteered countless hours to getting Ripples to your computer. Thanks to Susan Day, Bill Jaynes, Barbara Jividen, Bruce Kennedy, John Nuhn, Annette Rogers and Juli Wilcox. Thanks also to our staff at the Wheat Ridge office for their expertise and support.

Ripples took a bit of time to be born but I'm sure you'll find it a great new member benefit of the North American Nature Photography Association.
