2004 Summit Update
July 2003

Plans are coming together for NANPA's Tenth Anniversary Summit. Summit Co-Chair John Nuhn says it will be a dynamite event!

The North American Nature Photography Association's Tenth Anniversary Summit will be held in Portland, Oregon, January 21-
25, 2004. The Summit Program Committee, co-chaired by John Nuhn and Debbie Ferrell-Smith, has confirmed Dewitt Jones,
George Lepp, Art Wolfe and Norbert Wu as major speakers.

Because the 2004 Summit marks the tenth anniversary of NANPA's founding, the program committee is determined to make it the best ever held, a tall order given the increasing
standard of excellence shown by NANPA's international gatherings of photographers since the first one in 1995 in Fort
Myers, Florida.

Marine Photographer To Receive NANPA's Highest Honor
July 2003

The North American Nature Photography Association has named Norbert Wu as its 2004 recipient of the "Outstanding Photographer of the Year" award, to be presented at the organization's Tenth Anniversary Summit in Portland, Oregon, January 21-25, 2004. Wu joins John Shaw, Art Wolfe, Frans Lanting, Tom Mangelsen, Robert Glenn Ketchum, Michael "Nick" Nichols, and Gary Braasch as recipients of this prestigious award. Wu described the award as "the highest honor an American nature photographer can be given by his peers."

Norbert Wu is an independent photographer and filmmaker who specializes in marine issues. His writing and photography have appeared in thousands of books, films, and magazines, including feature articles in Audubon, Le Figaro, GEO, International Wildlife, National Geographic, and Omni, and the covers of GEO, Natural History, Time, and Terre Sauvage. He is the author and photographer of fifteen books on wildlife and photography and the originator and photographer for several children's book series on the oceans.

Exhibits of his work have been shown at the American Museum of Natural History, the California Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, and the National Museum of Wildlife Art. His background includes degrees in electrical and mechanical engineering from Stanford University and doctoral studies at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. He was awarded National Science Foundation (NSF) Artists and Writers Grants to document wildlife and research in Antarctica in 1997, 1999, and 2000.

In 2000, he was awarded the Antarctica Service Medal of the United States of America "for his contributions to exploration and science in the U.S. Antarctic Program." His recent films include a high- definition television (HDTV) program on Antarctica's underwater world for WNET/Thirteen New York's Nature series that airs on PBS. In 1999, he was awarded a Pew Marine Conservation Fellowship, the world's most prestigious award in ocean conservation and outreach. Through 2003 he used this grant to document, in stills and high-definition video, the world's most unique and threatened underwater habitats.

From 2000 to 2003, Norbert Wu served as the primary cinematographer for many of the featured exhibits in the new Hall of Ocean Life at the American Museum of Natural History. His newest books, Diving the World, and Under Antarctic Ice, will be published by Hugh Lauter Levin Associates and the University of California Press in 2003 and 2004. His newest children's books, The Ocean Is..., and Antarctic Ice, will be published by Henry Holt in 2003.

NANPA Joins Coalition to Prevent Oil Drilling in Alaska
Apr 15, 2002

The North American Nature Photography Association Board of Directors has confirmed an Executive Committee decision to sign a petition and join a coalition of over 500 local, regional, and national organizations working to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from oil drilling and support efforts to add its 1.5 million acre Coastal Plain to the U.S. wilderness preservation system. Arrangements were completed April 15 for NANPA to join the coalition.

Coalition membership does not place any financial burden on NANPA, or require the association to participate in any other activities. It means that NANPA will be listed as a member of the Alaska Coalition on publications and other materials related to the protection of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The petition also supports the Coalition's efforts to protect the Tongass and Chugach National Forests.

As a follow-up, NANPA sent a letter giving the reasons for its support of the petition to Mr. Dan Ritzman, National Outreach Director for the Alaska Coalition in Washington, D.C., which was distributed to the U.S. Senate as they debated the issue.

NANPA International Out-reach Tour
Nov 9, 2001

Connie K. Bransilver, President of the North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA) launched NANPA's first international out-reach goodwill tour October 25th to November 4th, 2001, traveling to Germany, Holland, Denmark, and Sweden. One of Connie's priorities as NANPA president is developing and fostering communication and cooperation worldwide with similar nature photography organizations. Included in the NANPA delegation were NANPA members Klaus Nigge, Lunen Germany, and Larry and Judy Michael, Wisconsin, USA.

Art Wolfe was a keynote speaker at both GDT in Germany -- on the Living Wild -- and he gave two programs at Vargarda in Sweden -- on the Living Wild and on his new book, The High Himalaya. He is well known and extremely popular in Europe. Living Wild is being published in German. Tom Walker spoke at Vargarda where he is well-known and much appreciated. He gave two presentations there -- one on Denali and the other on Alaska. Many Swedes and Finns have visited him in Alaska and shot with him there. Another American, but not a NANPA member, Dr. Mark Moffett, presented his ants -- extreme macro of what he calls War and Sex in Miniature -- at GDT. His photography is amazing and his presentation animated.

The delegation attended the 30th anniversary photo festival of German Wildlife Photographers (GDT) in Lunen Germany. This renowned annual festival was attended by over 700 nature photography participants from numerous countries. The GDT festival includes a trade show, exhibition, and outstanding presentations by premiere nature photographers from around the world.

Hosted by GDT Executive Director Florian Mollers and past-president Klaus Nigge, the NANPA delegation was warmly received by our new German nature photography friends. During the GDT festival, Connie delivered a 20 minute slide presentation which included highlights from the member slide show and the scholarship students presentation at the 2001 NANPA Summit, as well as work from NANPA and NANPA Foundation Board members. She addressed the assembly on NANPA and international communications and cooperation, and participated in the GDT International Committee meeting with representatives of 10 countries.

The purpose of the meeting was to open a dialogue and foster and develop communications and cooperation between nature photography associations through out the world. Participants included representatives from Austria, Belgium, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, Poland, and USA. The umbrella organization European Nature Photographers Associations represents approx. 5,600 nature photographers. NANPA's membership is about 2000. This committee agreed to meet as a group at each country's annual meetings in the future.

Following the GDT annual photo-festival, the delegation were the guests of the Vargarda Foto Klubb in Vargarda, Sweden at their annual photo festival in southern Sweden. Their outstanding annual meeting includes a trade show, exhibition, and presentations of nature photography from around the world. This world renowned photo club is going into their 20th year with Executive Director Rolf "Magnus" Magnusson and his daughter Anika hosting the annual event. Connie delivered and distributed numerous copies of NANPA's newsletter "Currents", Summit 2001 brochures, and NANPA new member brochures.

The NANPA delegation was warmly received and very pleased to have so many new Scandinavian nature photography friends. Both the German GDT and the Swedish Vargarda Foto Klubb are prestigious, highly regarded nature photography organizations with large memberships and many activities similar to NANPA's.

Between the GDT festival and the Vargarda festival, the delegation met with and toured one of Germany's finest publishing houses, TECKLENBORG VERLAG, in Steinfurt, Germany. This 30 year-old family owned firm with 60 employees has a strong commitment to nature photography. Included in the meeting and tour were Mr. Hubert Tecklenborg, owner, Stefanie Tecklenborg, and editors Dr. Hans-Peter Schaub, and Eduard Gossner.

TECKLENBORG VERLAG has just launched their newest product, NATUREPHOTO magazine, billed as "the definitive international magazine for outdoor photography." First of it's kind, NATUREPHOTO is published in English and will have worldwide distribution. This vanguard English language German publication is dedicated to international nature photography. Connie and the delegation received copies of the first issue January 2002 and discussed the future possibilities of using this tool for international nature photography communications and cooperation worldwide.

Connie reported that the international out-reach good will tour was a great success, and says she looks forward to providing NANPA with a more complete report.
