Sue Forbes Bio
After careers as an Engineer Officer in the Royal Air Force and a Product Management executive in high-tech companies of Silicon Valley, I’m now working on my real passion…teaching photography on expedition ships and traveling the world to photograph unusual places and wildlife. Even after visiting over 90 countries, the list of sites to see and adventures to experience is still growing.
My philosophy in photographing wildlife is to capture their behaviors so that the viewer is transported into their world and understands more than just a visual representation of the animal.
Sue Forbes Interview
Title of Your Winning Image: The Chase
How did you get the image?
I was sailing across the Indian Ocean on an expedition ship. We’d been seeing flying fish and occasionally boobies flying above us watching for the fish. As the boobies swoop down to catch the flying fish, I’d try to track them and captured this image just before it reached the fish.
What was special about this opportunity you had to capture the image?
After being out on deck for days, it was great to awake to calm waters with the fish jumping and a single juvenile Red-footed Booby flying above. It all came together as the booby dove down and started chasing the fish with the reflection of both in the water.
What equipment and camera settings were you using to capture the image?
Canon EOS 5D MkIII, EF300mm f/2.8 lens + 1.4x extender, handheld. Shot at 1/1600 sec at f/9 ISO 640
Related to your nature photography:
How long have you been photographing and what, in particular, got you into nature photography?
It started when I was serving in the Royal Air Force over 30 years ago, stationed on the Falklands Islands. The beauty of the islands and the variety of wildlife there led me to want to record my experiences on film, and I’ve been capturing the natural world since then.
Describe your nature photography experience level and current status.
I am a professional photographer currently working on Expedition ships around the world. I teach photography, drive zodiacs and guide in addition to creating slideshows for the passengers.
