NANPA High School Scholarship Application Overview

From its inception, NANPA has been dedicated to teaching the next generation of nature photographers. To that end, the NANPA High School Scholarship Program (NHSSP) has already presented scholarships to more than 110 creative students who have attended NANPA Annual Summits in the past. To continue this legacy, NANPA will select ten more students to attend the Fourteenth Annual NANPA Summit in Destin, Florida, February 24 - March 2, 2008.

Notice: Scholarship applications are no longer being accepted for the 2007 scholarship program.

Please check back in May, 2008 to use forms for the 2008 scholarship program.

Each year's group of ten scholarship recipients will attend regular NANPA Summit programs, participate in field workshops designed specifically for them, and receive special photographic instruction from a variety of nature photography and publishing professionals. Students will gain awareness, appreciation and concern for the natural environment, and improve their skills and confidence in the art of nature photography. This will be accomplished through classroom and field instruction, as well as personal interaction with some of the world's best-known and highly skilled nature photographers. The images which students photograph during field work are critiqued, edited, and used in a slide presentation for all attending NANPA members to view on the Summit's final day.

Mature high school students who demonstrate a serious interest in nature photography should consider applying for one of these scholarships. Eligible students must be 14 years old by June 1, 2007, but not yet 19 as of February 23, 2008. The scholarship covers all lodging, airport shuttles, field trip transportation, the Summit registration fee, and a one-year membership in NANPA. Transportation to and from the Summit location is the responsibility of the student and his or her family. Additionally, there is a $300 attendance fee for food and supplies which is due at the time of acceptance. Some financial aid is available for those unable to pay this $300 fee. Since there are a limited number of positions available in the NANPA scholarship programs, a student may receive only one scholarship between the high school and college programs.

There are two articles relating to NHSSP that appeared in Nature's Best Photography magazine - one in the Spring 2006 issue, titled, "NANPA Lights the Path for Future Nature Photographers" and the other appeared in the Summer 2004 issue, titled "Focus on Tomorrow". The articles highlight the benefits and rewards of the scholarship program.

The program succeeds because of very generous assistance from many individuals, the NANPA Foundation and a number of companies. For the high school program, Canon USA provides all the digital cameras, lenses, printers, projection equipment and tech support. Apple Computers provides the Macintosh computers and monitors. Additionally, Bogen, Delkin, Wimberley, Hunt's Photo and Photoflex provide photographic supplies and materials.

NANPA spends more than $2,500.00 per student to develop and operate the scholarship program. We invite you to make a contribution to help support the program for future students.

NANPA HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION FORM

Each applicant must provide personal contact information, list his/her photography equipment and respond to the essay questions.

Here is a sample application form in PDF format you may review. This sample PDF file is not to be used as the official application form. It is only an offline guide for preparing the responses that you will then enter into the online application.

If you don't have a current version of the Acrobat Reader software, you can download a free copy here.

To avoid losing valuable information while online, we recommend that applicants first answer the essay questions in a separate saved document on their computer hard drive or on a disk (use the links above to get a sample). When completing the online form located on the NANPA website, those answers then can be copied and pasted into the appropriate section and edited as necessary.

Also, be sure to prepare your three photo submissions (described below) BEFORE starting the online application process.

If you are ready to begin the online application process, go to the bottom of this page and click on the button, "Begin Online Application Process".

THREE (3) PHOTOGRAPHIC IMAGES

Each applicant must submit three photographic images that best demonstrate his/her efforts in NATURE photography. Each photo should include a title and a brief descriptive paragraph about why the image was made and/or selected for submission. We recommend a saved document for this text as well, before going online.

Remember to prepare ALL your images BEFORE starting the online application. You will not have an opportunity to go back and upload them later.

On the upload page there will be instructions and space to upload your images. For each image: 1) Click Browse to select the image from your computer, enter (paste) the title, and the brief descriptive paragraph about why the image was made and/or selected for submission. 2) Click Submit Image to upload each photo. After you have completed all photo entries, click Finalize Submission to complete the application process.
