Moloka’i Island’s northern coast is The Haleakalā silversword (Argyroxiphium andwicense subspecies Macrocephalum), is found only on the alpine rim of one of the world’s most massive volcanoes. This plant is not yet documented as a Philodoria host, but several close relatives in this iconic Hawaiian plant lineage are. Because of the Haleakalā silversword’s close relationship to known hosts, it is possible that a new, undocumented Philodoria species may live only on this plant. Predictions like this drive the project’s search for undescribed Philodoria species in new habitats and on new host plants.
